‘Tis the time of year for making lists. The holidays are upon us and the busy-ness of the season can get away from us. So, lists can be good way of keeping it all in order, staying organized, and making sure things get done. Your Grocery List. Your Shopping List. Your Gift Giving List. Your Travel Itinerary List, etc. But don’t forget this important one…
Your Fall Home Maintenance List:
- Roll up and store any garden hose(s) and/or soaker hose(s) and store any time clocks and watering system connectors that will not be used this winter.
- Repair any dripping exterior faucets
- Install an outdoor faucet cover on all exterior faucets to prevent pipes from freezing when temperatures drop.
- Reset the sprinkler timeclock to run 1 day per week . . . hopefully your system has a functional moisture sensor or is designed to monitor the weather through a Wi-Fi connection. If your system is not digital, that might make a good investment and gift for yourself.
- Fertilize your lawn and treat with pre-emergent two (2) weeks after the last mowing for the year. This is so that the lawn will be healthy this Winter and free of weeds come Spring.
- Clean the gutters and it is essential that the downspouts are clear as well. This is easier when the contents of the gutters are dry. I like to use a leaf blower while wearing gloves and eye protection.
- Trim back any shrubs and trees contacting the home, eave or roof. Trim any tree branches that are overhanging the chimney.
- Put away patio umbrellas and collapsible awnings.
- Check for any exterior decayed wood, make repairs or patch and prime to keep moisture from causing further damage until Springtime when you can work on it then. There can be decay at the roof level siding, fascia boards in contact with roof and some chimneys at the roof level are Masonite or wood that may need attention as well.
- If you have any doubts that there may be any issues with your heat pump or gas furnace by all means schedule an HVAC service to inspect your system before winter is here.
